Well not quite - I ordered my £100 Elonex ONE months ago, there was some delay in shipping them and I was offered a ‘top of the range’ Elonex ONEt+ for a few pounds more - still well less than £150 including postage and packing.

So, what’s the verdict? Initial thoughts are that is a good product - well worth the money. What I intend to do is post on here as my experience of the unit grows and we’ll draw a conclusion a few months down the line.

The first thing to say is that the keyboard is so usable - I can type fairly quickly with two or three fingers on a full sized keyboard and so too on the ONE. The small keys hardly hamper my speed and are really quite positive to the touch - not rubbery as I was expecting. However, the type-ahead buffer can be easily overwhelmed, but this is a processor speed issue which I am sure will rear it’s head over the coming weeks.

My problem is going to be comparing this little low cost unit to my new all-singing, all-dancing, Acer dual-core laptop - though the latter has Vista installed on it so maybe the Elonex will prove to be the better item. And it’s going to be difficult criticising it for lack of features considering its low price. I will try to be objective and honest.

OK, it’s a little slow, sometimes the unit can’t keep up with my typing speed and you cannot switch it off and back on to where you left off (commonly known as suspend and resume), it’s a proper shutdown and reboot. But then it cost just over a £100 and to get it down in price they’ve probably had to use small batteries that wouldn’t be able to power the unit for long when switched off.

Well, I typed this blog on it so it works. Let’s just see how it gets on in a busy IT office over the next few weeks.
